Farmers’ Markets Bring Fresh Boost to Local Economy
August 5, 2025
Enticing folks to buy local has always been an easy sell in Iowa. In 1843, Dubuque opened its first farmers’ market, which grew so much in popularity that by 7 a.m., there was hardly anything left.
Fast forward to today, where you’ll find 200 farmers' markets throughout the state, collectively generating tens of millions of dollars in revenue. Fiscal benefits aside, there’s something irresistible about local eggs, baked goods, fresh produce, and handcrafted wares.
“Farmer's Markets are hard to resist because of their unique products and homemade nature. Nowadays, food is so processed. Chemicals are used on produce, and it is shipped in from so far away. People love being able to source a healthier, local option,” said photographer Christina Kjar, who heads up the Holstein Farmers Market.
As Western Iowa Advantage tips its hat to National Farmers Market Week, celebrated August 3-9, we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to highlight two of Ida County’s most beloved gatherings.
Holstein Farmers Market
Scrolling through the Holstein Farmers Market Facebook page plays out like a lesson in weakening willpower. After a few swipes, you know you’ll be waving the white flag.
Organic sourdough bread, bright red strawberries, golden, thick honey in mason jars, artisan soaps, bright, springy bouquets, and more are all for the taking every Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from June through August, presuming Mother Nature cooperates.
When the weather leans closer to pretty than persnickety, kiddos can enjoy pony rides a la the Meyer Petting Zoo. And beyond the irresistible goods for sale, the market also embraces a “pay it forward” mentality.
“Each week, a local group or organization serves our market meal. The money they raise from their meals goes directly to their group or cause they are supporting,” said Kjar.
2nd & Main Farmers Market
Just as captivating (and a quick jaunt south) is the 2nd & Main Farmers Market in Ida Grove, held at Godbersen Park from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays during the summer season.
“The fresh produce at markets lately has been *chef's kiss* and we know it’s just going to keep getting better,” reads a recent Facebook post.
Indeed. The fruits and vegetables are so vibrant that they look like they’re in Technicolor. Kudos if you can park there in control your taste buds, with the yummy bags of homemade candies and delightfully iced sugar cookies calling your name.
Every week, you’ll see area organizations like the Heritage Days Committee and Chamber of Commerce serving up summer-inspired eats, often for a free-will donation that will benefit future 2nd & Main Farmers’ Markets. Not to mention, an ambiance that rocks with live, local music, and plenty of time to socialize with your neighbors.
Be sure to mark your calendars for both of these farmers’ markets in support of our marvelous communities. We hope to see you there!
