Twin Lakes State Parks

Twin Lakes State Parks includes 3 parks on North Twin Lake with tables, stoves, and toilets. Playground equipment and beaches at 2 of the parks. A large shelter is available at the east side location. Visitors must carry out their trash. Northwest Iowa Fishing Reports credits North Twin Lake as a terrific spot to hook walleye and crappie. University 40

University 40 is located south of Lohrville along the Cedar Creek and was purchased from the University of Iowa by Calhoun County in 1960. Outdoor recreationists can enjoy the park all year. Amenities include 2 shelter houses, 1 full restroom and multiple vault toilets, 1 camper cabin, and 8 full hookup campsites available for $25/night. Creek access and trails. No hunting allowed. Rockwell City Landmark Depot Museum

Railroads came to Rockwell City in 1881. There were as many as four passenger trains a day, as well as freight trains running through the town. The Milwaukee Depot is the only remaining depot of the original three. Service to the depot was suspended in 1975. Ralph Earwood Memorial Nature Trail/Kinney-Mohr Trail is a paved walking path lined with trees of just over 1 mile located on 13.5 acres in Lohrville. It is mostly located on an abandoned railroad bed and is continually expanding. Learn More

North Central Heritage Trail

North Central Heritage Trail features a butterfly garden and several historical displays, including one about the meteor crater created thousands of years ago. Located on N65, it uses the old railroad bed as part of its path system. Learn More

 

Featherstone Park

Featherstone Park is 35 acres on the northwest shoreline of North Twin Lake. There are 79 campsites with electricity and water (dump site available) and primitive campsites. No reservations for camping. 7 cabins available to rent with online reservations at mycountyparks.com. Park amenities include 3 full bathroom/shower facilities, 2 shelter houses, playground, docks for swimming and fishing, boat ramp, and a handicap accessible dock on the southwest. There is a 7-mile paved bike and walking trail that starts along North Twin and circles the lake. No hunting allowed. Learn More


Calhoun County Museum

The Museum, which was formally the Rockwell City High School, is more than a warehouse of antiques for Calhoun County, but a source of education and entertainment. The Log Cabin is 10'x12' in size and was built in 1915 as a home in Lake City, time unknown when it made its journey to Rockwell City. It became a restoration project for the Eagle Scout Colin Johnson, which was completed in July of 2018. Learn More

Rainbow Bend/Raccoon River Wildlife Areas

Rainbow Bend/Raccoon River Wildlife Areas are adjacent to the Raccoon River. Rainbow Bend is 19 acres north of the river with boat ramp access to river and pit toilets. There is a 3-arch Marsh Rainbow Arch Bridge that is on the National Historic Landmark List. The Raccoon River Wildlife Area is wet woodland filled with wildlife, south of the river. Enter from Iberia St., south of Lake City. Two electric campsites available for $10/night. In-season hunting allowed. Rainbow Bridge was built in 1914 by James B. Marsh and is approximately 271 feet long. It was retired from vehicular use in 1985, but is still open to pedestrians. You can see the bridge south of Lake City.
