SAC CITY NATIVE KEVIN PEYTON, 18, EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION
SAC CITY, Iowa (July 10, 2006) — Sac Community High School senior Kevin Peyton isn’t like most kids his age. In fact, he’s like ten of them. That’s because Kevin was selected as a national winner of the Prudential Spirit of the Community Award for his outstanding achievements in community service.
A long-time 4-H member, Kevin raised over $17,000 in grants and donations to be put toward the creation of 75 Barn Quilts. The paint and wood “quilts” can be seen fixed upon barns throughout Sac County. Kevin initiated the service project with the hopes of increasing tourism in his Western Iowa region.
The ten winners were announced on May 8, 2006, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The National Selection Committee that chooses the National Honorees was co-chaired by Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, and Art Ryan, Chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial, according to Prudential Financial.
Because of his achievements, Kevin and Sac County have received national media coverage through Prudential Financial, Yahoo.com, 4-H, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association, Iowa State University, Iowa Soybean Association, Governor Tom Vilsack, Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Farm Bureau, and multiple regional daily newspapers across the country.
