Title of Presentation: Throw Away the Cookie Cutter: Adapting Zoning that Works for Your Community

Session Description: Land use education targets capacity building of local staff and officials. Often local governments that have adopted land use controls have done so without a deep consideration of how to best regulate their community in particular.  Plans may be decades out-of-date and the code itself is often copied from a one-size-fits-all model ordinance. These borrowed codes often create negative unintended consequences, especially for potential infill development or the rehabilitation of older homes. Helping local governments understand the legal tools available to them opens the possibility to create codes that remove unnecessary legal barriers to the creation of new housing and encourage investment in older homes.
