Thirty-Somethings Resettle in Greene County
Yatisha (Tish) Harmeyer never imagined happiness meant coming full circle. She is 33, has a 20s-era, two-story home, a wonderful husband and four beautiful children. Tish’s husband, Marcus, has primarily worked in agriculture, which moved their family to several small communities around Iowa. In 2004, Marcus found a job in Des Moines. The couple was thrilled to move to a community that had a grocery store, hospital, clinic, eye doctor, dentist and various retail stores.
But the Harmeyers didn’t move to Des Moines. They found everything they needed just to the west of Des Moines — actually about 70 miles west — in the middle of Greene County, which just happens to be where Tish spent her childhood. For them, Jefferson, Iowa, the 4,500-resident, county seat, was the answer.
“The city has a great, very affordable recreation center that offers several classes as well as children’s programs,” Tish said. “Several city parks and a pool make it very kid-friendly and we have an excellent school system with a very dedicated teaching staff.”
Although having family in the area was a big factor, their decision to move to Jefferson was mostly based around their four children. The added bonus has been somewhat of a surprise. Over the last two and a half years, the Harmeyers have seen an influx of thirty-somethings like themselves move into their neighborhood.
“We have met several people our age that have moved in,” said Tish. “We have made a lot of great friendships and think we have a very fun, progressive, young community.”
Tish also pointed out that while many of the older residents are moving from the city’s larger, older homes, they are remaining in the community, living in condominiums and assisted living facilities. And the community does well taking in care of its residents’ diverse needs.
“There is also Genesis Development, a program that gives housing and jobs around the city to mentally and physically handicapped people,” Tish said. “The program is well received in the community.”
Since Tish has an in-home child care service, she enjoys getting involved in activities outside the home. Helping with her church’s religious education board, sitting on the board of her children’s swim team, working on the annual Bell Tower Festival committee and participating in a local sorority keep her intouch with the Jefferson community.
“I was born in Greene County but have been away for 20 years and never thought I would end up back here, but I am glad I did!”
